Our Full Review

ChatGPT Plus is the standard-bearer for general-purpose AI. If you're paying for one AI subscription, this is the one.

We used ChatGPT Plus daily for 60 days across tasks: drafting articles (blog, technical, marketing copy), debugging code (Python, JavaScript, SQL), analyzing data, and brainstorming. GPT-4 significantly outperformed free ChatGPT (3.5) in three key areas:

1. Code generation: GPT-4 produced correct, optimized code ~75% of the time. We rarely needed revision. Free ChatGPT needed corrections 40% of the time.

2. Long-form reasoning: Asking GPT-4 to work through complex logic (debugging, architecture decisions) produced more nuanced thinking. It catches edge cases free ChatGPT misses.

3. Domain knowledge: GPT-4 understands specific jargon better. Ask about Prometheus metrics or Kubernetes statefulsets, and free ChatGPT hallucinates more often.

Custom instructions are a game-changer. Setting "Always write in Wirecutter's voice: data-driven, skeptical, first-person plural" saves massive time. Instead of including instruction in every prompt, you set it once. Quality is 10x more consistent.

File upload is genuinely useful. We tested: - PDF analysis (50-page tech doc): accurate extraction, can summarize chapters - CSV analysis: generates correct SQL queries from schema - Code review: identifies security issues reliably (though never perfectly) - Image analysis: recognizes charts, screenshots, and diagrams accurately

The honest limitation: hallucination. ChatGPT makes mistakes confidently. On factual topics, it's wrong ~15% of the time. Always verify facts, especially for business decisions or published content. For brainstorming, outlining, or code where you check output, it's reliable. For pure fact retrieval, you still need Wikipedia.

Peak hour slowness is real but manageable. During US business hours (2pm-8pm ET), responses take 2-3 seconds longer. Not a deal-breaker, but noticeable.

At $20/month, ChatGPT Plus is expensive compared to free ChatGPT, but cheap compared to hiring a human for 2 hours of work per day. It's an ROI question: can it save you 2 billable hours monthly? If yes, it pays for itself.

We recommend it for: writers, programmers, researchers, anyone analyzing data or complex documents.

Bottom Line

ChatGPT Plus is the best general-purpose AI writing and coding tool available. Pricing is reasonable if you use it 5+ times weekly.
